Membership Expectations

Capital Vox Jazz Choir
Membership Expectations

Capital Vox aims to provide a quality experience - for our members in learning and performing, for our guest instrumentalists and vocalists, and for our audiences in listening and enjoyment.

Achieving this quality depends on choir members consistently bringing their musical best to rehearsals and performances.

It also depends on drawing and sustaining audiences; on doing things to help organize performances and raise funds beyond dues, including ticket sales and other activities; and on electing a volunteer Board to keep it all singing along.

So Capital Vox as a choir has developed expectations for its members. Together they make Capital Vox a good instrument for the music we sing. Here they are.

Performances:

Capital Vox typically performs three concerts as part of its season. The choir occasionally hosts special fundraising events. All members are expected to be available for each of these events.

Community Events:

Each season, Capital Vox participates in a selection of community events. In past seasons, we have sung at events hosted by the A-Channel, Impressions in Jazz Orchestra, Temple Israel, and the Ottawa International Jazz Festival. The choir generally receives invitations to sing at various events during the course of the season. These opportunities are presented to the choir as they arise.

Rehearsals:

Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Alcorn Music Studios. The season consists of between 30 and 36 rehearsals a year with an average of 10 rehearsals per concert preparation period.  In addition, there are sectional rehearsals from 6:30 to 7:30 on a rotation basis (Sopranos, Altos, Men)

Each section (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) is encouraged to hold additional sectional rehearsals as needed to reinforce musical learning that occurs during regular sectionals and rehearsals.

Attendance policy:

Rehearsals are vital, not only for learning the music for the concerts but also for building a high calibre ensemble.

Members are expected to attend all regular rehearsals, as a rule, and to advise Elise in advance if they will be missing a rehearsal and to provide a valid reason for their absence.

Any member who misses three rehearsals per performance preparation period will be asked to demonstrate their proficiency with the concert material for Elise.

Also, attendance at dress rehearsal (the week or two prior to the performance) and sound check (day of performance) is mandatory.

Dues:

Membership dues are $300 ($120 for full-time students) per year. Membership dues represent a significant portion of the choir’s essential revenue. Dues can be paid for the entire season at once or in three instalments of $100 ($40 for students) due the first rehearsal in September, January and April. If members are unable to pay dues due to special circumstances, they are asked to communicate with the Treasurer.

To be a member in good standing for the purposes of voting at the choir’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and attending and participating in any special general meetings, your membership dues must be paid in full by the date of the meeting in question.

Ticket Sales:

Approximately three-quarters of the people who attend our concerts buy their tickets directly from choir members. As a choir member, you will be asked to make tickets available to your family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances in the weeks leading up to a concert. For each season there will be a target number of tickets to sell, based on that season’s goals and budget.

Other Fundraising:

Other choir fundraising initiatives in the past have included selling poinsettias, having a dance party/auction. We also sell advertising in our programmes. Choir members are asked to participate in these initiatives.

Volunteer Requirement:

Throughout the year, Capital Vox participates in events that require volunteer support. These include concerts, events in the community, and the poinsettia fundraiser, among others. While the choir is fortunate to have some wonderful non-singing volunteers, we also need volunteers from within the choir.
